The Core Theme for this Full Moon = Be the Best Version I Can of Who I Truly Am

Unlike many recent Full Moons, this First Full Moon of 2016 which is in Leo, does not awaken many other configurations in the sky. However, it does take place within the context of some major planetary aspects. It also comes at the end of a short 10 day time frame when 6 well known and loved celebrities left this planet. Four of them including David Bowie were involved in the music industry, Dan Haggerty was an actor and the author Stephen Levine was renowned for his spiritual work with death and dying. No doubt there are thousands less known, yet equally valued and loved souls throughout the planet, who also left at this time – many in very tragic circumstances of conflict, poverty and homelessness. However as the life and death of individuals in the public eye effortlessly draw our attention, they can more easily bring to the fore issues in the wider collective, that need our urgent attention. More about this later! First let’s take a deeper look at this Full Moon.  David-Bowie-ziggy-stardust

Full Moons in Leo invite us to integrate our need to develop our individual self, with our desire to participate in the evolution of the collective, regardless of individual needs. This mirrors our life long pull and push between our need to shine as an individual (Leo) and our awareness that in order to observe and change the greater pattern of humanity (Aquarius), we need to remain a somewhat anonymous, detached outsider. The Sun, which is the ruler of Leo, holds the key to integrating these two polarities at this time. Through forming a solid sense of Self in the process of individuation, we become our own authority, with less concern for the opinions of others, including our family and tribe. Fiery Leo also rules the heart, reminding us that the more we centre ourselves in our heart, the more we can contribute constructively to the Aquarian evolution of humanity. Once we inhabit love we are no longer attached to a need to be special and all our actions become an extension of love.

The ‘just within orb’ square to Mars in Scorpio by the Full Moon, invites us to take action at this time to release anything that is not in keeping with who we are from a heart centered perspective. When Mars travels through the underground arena of our shadow land, he invites us to search for and cut out whatever is hindering us from facing ourselves, in the manner of a skilled surgeon’s scalpel. This regenerative process requires ruthless honesty with ourselves and others. Wherever the transit of Mars lands in our chart we may be invited to go on a similar journey to Inanna, when she visited her sister Ereshkigal in the underworld. This may take the form of a physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual detox. Peeling off the layers enables us to discover who we truly are. We can then choose the parts of ourselves we are happy with and want to build on and the parts where we want to make changes and adjustments. The trine to Neptune in Pisces by Mars, reminds us of the importance of paying heed to our emotions as well as remembering that our actions have reverberations far and wide, way beyond the personal ‘I’.

The Uranus/Pluto square continues to be an integral part of our inner and outer landscape, with only a degree distance between these two powerful transpersonal planets. With Mercury Retrograde forming an exact conjunction to Pluto since Jan 22nd and continuing to do so until the end of this month, due to his stationary direct motion on the day of the Full Moon, our minds are likely to find it more challenging to quieten obsessive thoughts. It is worth noticing what those thoughts are about and spending some time writing about them so that we can get to the core of what they are trying to inform us about. The core theme for Mercury and Pluto together is honesty and integrity in our thoughts as well as our actions. Hence, once we have clarified the underlying theme of our thoughts, the next step is about taking action on a personal and collective level.  This is the time to give voice to the new structures we want in the world both for ourselves and for future generations. 2016 overall, offers us a particularly fertile opportunity to plant seeds for totally new and innovative foundations. The time is now to take a chance and let go of the old restrictive structures, (including old mental patterns) built on ego and greed. The reality is that they have already disintegrated. Our only real choice is whether we are part of the innovative team creating the new, or one of the diminishing numbers clinging onto the dying embers of the old. The choice in fact is a very simple one – do I choose love or fear going forward?

The Sabian symbol for this Full Moon is:  ‘A Formally Dressed Elderly Man stands near Trophies he brought back from a Hunting Expedition’. One possible interpretation of this is as a metaphor for the last remnants of the ego struggling for attention and recognition. Applying it to our own lives during this Full Moon we may notice aspects of ourselves that are seeking approval for something that is no longer relevant. In expressing the Leo energy at its most open heartedness rather than egocentric, we can simply ‘be Love’.

Some questions we might consider at this time:

  1. When were you closest to the best version of your true self? How close are you to that now? What would bring you closer to this?
  2. How important is Love in your life? How connected are you to Love?
  3. Where are you most creative in your life? How do you feel when you are creative?

Some Tools to work with during this Full Moon time and throughout the rest of the month:

  1. Taking some peaceful quiet time alone to allow the mind to settle and calm down. Time in nature can help with this.
  2. This is a great time to keep a reflective journal as a way of working with thought patterns. One of the keys is to keep writing in a totally non-judgemental way until the core issue comes to light.
  3. With Jupiter conjunct the North Node in Virgo this is a great time to make amends where needed, so that new seeds can be planted in fresh soil throughout the year.

On a Global Level:

Without a doubt these past 10 days have witnessed the largest number of individual and separate celebrity deaths within a short space of time that has ever been recorded! On an astrological level we can of course look at their charts and notice some similar transit/awakenings at this time. We can also surmise that there may be a generational commonality between the individuals due to their age ranging between 67 and 78 However as all these individuals had been seriously ill for some time, I wonder if maybe these creative souls chose to leave this planet at the same time to draw our attention to the amazing impact their creativity has brought on our lives. Looking at all the facebook posts, newspaper articles etc  about Bowie and Glen Frey as well as the other 4 men, what struck me is the immense joy, fun and happiness these amazing individuals brought to our lives. All of them shared hardships and at times some self-destructive choices like all of us, making it so much easier to relate to them, despite their celebrity status. Yet each one of them courageously chose a creative life. My musings on this took me to wondering if their message is to remind us to not forgo our creativity in this short life. To not sacrifice joy, passion and adventure on the altar of greed, safety and mundaneness. To follow our heart desires rather than our fears. Maybe that is simply why they all left at the same time. I also think it’s interesting that they are all men – maybe as a reminder that it’s possible to integrate heart cantered creativity with masculinity on this planet!

The other huge event of course is the latest discovery of a new planet the size of Neptune, past Pluto,  just a couple of days after Stephen Hawking warned us that our survival as a species is dependent on us ‘spreading out into space’ as we are destroying our planet!!download (87)

“Researchers have found evidence of a giant planet tracing a bizarre, highly elongated orbit in the outer solar system. The object, which the researchers have nicknamed Planet Nine, has a mass about 10 times that of Earth, 5,000 times the mass of Pluto and orbits about 20 times farther from the sun on average than does Neptune. In fact, it would take this new planet between 10,000 and 20,000 years to make just one full orbit around the sun.” [i]

Apparently the work on the new planetary discovery was started by Brown in 2003[ii]. It’s interesting that Mars was also in Scorpio for part of that year and Uranus and Neptune were in Aquarius. As astrologers we usually allocate meaning to planets based on the planetary energies in the sky at the time of their discovery. As this planet has not actually been seen yet, the only viable date we can use for now is the announcement on Jan 20th. A further date will emerge in time if/when this planet, also known as Planet X will be seen. For now we are likely to associate it with the entrance of the Sun into Aquarius. At a core level this could be interpreted as a powerful indicator of the expansion into other parts of the universe described by Prof. Hawkin!

Who is most likely to resonate with these energies?
If your Sun, Moon and/or angles are between 1’ and 5’ Leo, Aquarius, Taurus and/or Scorpio you are likely to feel this Full Moon energy more powerfully.

Our last quote comes from the late author Stephen Levine:

“I learned that love is the only rational act of a lifetime. Everything else pales in comparison. Things that are motivated by love can still turn out badly in the physical world, but the intention for love does not turn out badly, it can only bring a deeper capacity for love.” – Stephen Levine
